FYI: This has now been done (was long overdue, just needed your two drops
to finally get it done..)

   --with-maxfd=N Override maximum number of filedescriptors. Useful
                           if you build as another user who is not privileged
                           to use the number of filedescriptors you want the
                           resulting binary to support
