Try _decreasing_ cache_mem on squid. Some experiments that I've done
seem to imply that larger values impact peak capacity in a negative way.
Also try reducing the number of file descriptors. I can certainly exceed
that figure on linux with fairly hardware...I can make about 100/sec
(120/sec in short bursts). (2xPII450, 6x8GB SCSI2 HDs, 1GB ram)
