swap.state vanishes

Hi all,
We use squid.2.2.STABLE4 on a Redhat 6.0 machine as a tranparent proxy/cache
server. Cache manager reports about 400,000 cached objects. But it's a while
that it's swap.state file becomes small. When we remove the swap.state and
restart the squid, it rebuilds the swap.state. But after a while when we get a
report from squid we see about 30,000 objects are available at the cache.
Does anybody have an idea?
Thanx in advance
