for just this task, look at Jef Poskanzer's recently announced
(to news.software.nntp) nnrpd in Java... which might be just what
you're looking for.

I don't see why you'd want to gateway anything like this through Squid,
though. You'd always be relying upon the program to 'know' its data
and protocol such that it would be pointless passing through Squid imho.
