cache_host_domain syntax

I note that the squid.conf examples from 1.1.5 indicate syntax like this:

cache_host_domain bigserver.usc.edu .edu

But the configuration files such as
http://www.nlanr.net/Cache/Configuration/squid.conf.bo indicate syntax
like this:

cache_host_domain uc.cache.nlanr.net com

Is there any difference in how the pattern matching works if you prepend a
dot or not?
