This problem could occur if:
1) you have a firewall which prevents DNS access outside your
firewall, and you did not configure a firewall proxy server
2) you configured for a firewall server which isn't there (less
likely I think)
Do local accesses without the proxy work?
Do local accesses through the proxy work? (empty no proxy
configuration)
If both do, then it sounds like you have a problem with the firewall.
