Adding cache_dir wipes out cache ?

Hi,

I remember last time when I added a new (second) cache_dir to config file,
squid (around 1.1.6) wipes out the whole existing cache on startup.

Is this a normal behaviour or I did something wrong ?

I need to to do add more cache_dir again now (squid 1.1.10),
any advice would be appreciated.
