cache_mem VS physical mem

Hello,
        I have a question with regards to the squid cache_mem setting vs
physical memory present. We are running Squid 1.1.10 on a PPro200 w/ 256
Megs of memory and 8 gig of disk (4x2gig drives) under BSDi 2.1.
        I recently changed the cache_mem setting from 160 to 180 and
noticed that the machine load went from 0.2 to 1.5. I also noticed that
the number of blocking processes to each cache disk (4 of them)
increased quite a bit also. The squid process is taking up about 200M of
memory. The machine is not running anything else but squid.

        My question is: What is the ideal setting for cache_mem with 256
Megs of physical memory.
