That wasn't quite right - I haven't yet tried the retry patch with 1.NOVM.16,
but 1.NOVM.15 runs fine (for me) without the retry patch, and consistently hits
the stuck file descriptor problem with the patch. [Original patch, modified
only to cope with the different version number, and a change elsewhere that
prevented patch applying one change automatically.]
