i know perfectly well the recommended method is slower to start. now, is it preferable to have a proxy server work slowly or not work quickly? and remember it only affects the startup - if you're fetching something like Netrape (something around 10 MB) the time it takes to start the transfer is a small part of your worry :)
i'm also not advocating using the recommended method to the exclusion of the other; but it should at least be a fallback.
anyway, it's immaterial, it's fixed in 1.2.
