This is the approach that most of the USENET news software is moving
towards. (Highwind Software's Cyclone and Typhoon products, as well as the
CNFS version of INN both make use of this). As far as news is concerned,
you end up with order-of-magnitudes of performance increases. But news is
a tad different in that you're getting a pretty decent flood of constant
incoming information. Squid probably does a lot more "hunting and
pecking".
