A number of things. The original use is to redirect request for popular
things that are mirrored nearby to the nearby mirror instead of the
remote site(s).

The actual use of redirectors today include:
* simple redirection as above
* advanced reverse proxies combining several origin servers into one big
virtual server
* authentication control
* probably some other uses I don't know of.
