When I built squid 2.2S2 on Red Hat 5.2 (upgraded to 2.2.7 kernel), it
automatically noticed it could have up to 1024 fds. You do need to
rebuild (make clean, ./configure, etc.) squid after building the 2.2.x
kernel, with the 2.2.x kernel in /usr/src/linux.
