pushcache.com has just made available a version of Squid modified to
be a pushcache - an implemention of "push done right." This new
version, called Cuttlefish, is based on Squid 1.1.20, but will be
ported to 2.x in a few months. It may be downloaded from:
http://www.pushcache.com/download.html
A pushcache differs from a normal web cache in that it has support for
initiating HTTP PUTs to interested application instances, including
neighboring pushcaches.
Pushcaches also include support for lower-latency caching systems.
This latency reduction is done through a hint caching system [see
Tewari et al, available from http://www.pushcache.com/wp.html].
Although Cuttlefish still supports ICP for backward compatibility,
hint caching obsoletes ICP. Hint caching resembles Cache Digests in
some ways, except that 'route' information is propagated to all
members of a connected cloud of hint caches rather than just to
immediate neighbors; the paper shows that this uses surprisingly
little bandwidth.
Cuttlefish was written cooperatively by pushcache.com and researchers
at the University of Texas at Austin. pushcache.com currently maintains
Cuttlefish. Please contact cuttle@pushcache.com with suggestions and
questions regarding Cuttlefish.
