You probably need to do an "unlimit openfiles" before starting squid to
avoid squid running into limits which the OS places on various
resources, to avoid user processes taking over the entire system. You
may also need to unlimit various memory settings. Try "man unlimit",
and figure out which of the various system limits may apply to you.

This is actually a very useful feature in the BSD family, though it can
be a nuisance to those encountering it for the first time.
