Hello all!!
I've followed every article and howto on the subject and still can't get
it to work!!
Basically: from the Win2k box's IE5 I can open "http://wpad/wpad.dat"
perfectly. Even "http://wpad.mydomain.com/wpad.dat", etc. These in
reality point to an apache server.
The appropriate (application/x-ns-proxy-autoconfig) mime type is entered
into apache correctly (for pac and dat extensions).
Konqueror DOES work with it : set up the autodetect settings - NOT
autoconf URL - in the proxy configuration dialog and it does find the
script. But IE5 won't!!! Web server logs confirm that konqueror is
retrieving wpad.dat whenever it needs it.
Manually setting the URL in IE5 does work as advertised (even using the
http://wpad/wpad.dat URL, or http://wpad.mydomain.com/wpad.dat URL).
The strange thing is after doing some packet sniffs, the win2k box isn't
even doing a DNS search for "wpad", "wpad.mydomain.com" (etc.), even
after an "ipconfig /flushdns" (to flush DNS caches). No local DNS is
running on the box.
Also, I don't see any access attempt logs from that box to the apache
server on that file or any other file. Basically, IE5 is NOT looking for
the script where I think it should be looking.
The box is a member of an NT4-style domain (Samba is PDC), so maybe
that's affecting it? No DHCP is in use.
Has anyone run into this before? Is there any way from win2k to debug
what's happening in auto configuration lookup (i.e., what it's looking
for and not finding?).
Hell - I even found an M$ TechNet article outlining the same procedure
above!!! And it still won't work!! AAARRGGHH!! We need Linus's Linux
goal to become a reality (dominate the world anyone? :) ).
Thanks for your help.
Best
Diego
