Yes, the download goes through the same gateway. The BSD machine does a
transparent bridge with two NICs and a third has the squid IP. One of the
bridge interfaces also has an IP on it. So yes, the machine is dual homed
in a crazy way.

The source IP address is NATted. The Squid machine has an internal IP.

downloads with wget on the squid machine with --proxy=off produce the same
results. Slow downloads. I should stop blaming squid at this point I think
:)

I think my best bet is to just set squid up on another machine that isn't a
super crazy BSD box.

Funny thing is, ALL internet traffic at the company goes through the BSD
machine's bridge interfaces eventually. And that doesn't slow the stuff
down.

And yes, I'm planning a 3.8 upgrade!

If you bypass the proxy and download direct, does the direct connection
go through the same gateway as the Squid proxied request? Is the
source IP address natted when it reaches the Internet?

Off-topic, but you might want to consider upgrading to OpenBSD 3.8,
to be released next month. There have been considerable enhancements
in OpenBSD and pf since release 3.5.

Were this an OpenBSD support list, the next step would be to post your
pf.conf, rc.conf, hostname.*, sysctl.conf, and dmesg :)

The next test I would recommend would be to use 'wget' or another HTTP
client on the OpenBSD server to download direct, just like Squid does,
and see if the download speed is similarly limited.

You could also try setting up a web server on another internal machine,
and using Squid to proxy requests for files from this internal server,
this would isolate the problem to the proxy or to the Internet side of the
equation.
