Anyway, I have very good results with AMD64 4000+ or better AMD 4200 X2 or
better with FreeBSD-AMD64 as transparent proxy on networks from 300 - 600
endusers. For 400+ you should go for X2 or Dual-Opteron. This AMDs are very
much faster than P4 and still cheaper. You should consider 2GB of RAM or
better 4 which is supported on most cheap MBs. You should go for SCSI. With
such configurations you can get 20-40% more out of your upstream link but
this depends lot on user habits.
