Squid updaten without loss of cache possible ?

Hi,

I want to update the squid in my school and don't want to loose the
cache.

I think we're running 1.1.6 and I want to update to the newest 'normal'
or perhaps NOVM-version.

Is it possible to update without loss of the cache ? If yes - how ?
