Of course, you can. Just compile the new version, move your
squid.conf file to another location, install the compiled distribution to
the same directory as your 1.1.6 one, configure your new squid.conf file
using your old squid.conf (and look at configuration file changes).
And use the same cache directory.
Nothing will be lost.
